1. There is no age limit for orthodontic treatment
In the UK, orthodontic treatment for adults has had a surge in popularity according to the British Orthodontic Society. Adults now make up for more than half of all orthodontic treatment.
Most would be embarrassed to be told they need braces in their adulthood, however we’ve seen a lot of our patients in Manchester who are willing to admit what they need for that perfect smile. At our practice in Manchester you may have already seen the different options that are available to most patients. These include:
- Clear braces
- Six Month Smiles
- Ceramic Braces
On our main homepage, you will be able to see which of these options suit your lifestyle best in terms of the speed of treatment, how clear they are and affordability.
2. The bite is just as important as the straightness
Many people forget what orthodontics is about in that, there are benefits other than just aesthetic. An orthodontist will examine and assess your teeth, they will make sure that when you open and close your mouth that your teeth are meeting properly.
It is no good having straight teeth and not being able to bite properly – the functionality of your teeth is what is most important and is something every patient should think about.
3. Orthodontists are trained specialists
Orthodontists’ are different from dentists in that they are specially trained in tooth movement, jaw function and tend to be more experienced in fitting braces. As well as this, our orthodontists are more adept at giving guidance and advice for certain treatments, including the above mentioned clear braces, Six Month Smiles and ceramic braces for our Manchester patients.
If you are unsure of what you need, or what options would be the best fit for you we’d advise you to book a consultation and find out what we can do for you.
4. Don’t get your hopes up
It might not always be possible to get the orthodontic treatment you had in mind. Before you get your heart set on what type of brace you want fitted, discuss with one of our consultants first.
Clear braces, Six Month Smiles and ceramic braces are all different types of treatments. If your orthodontist advises that he cannot treat you with clear braces for example, you can always ask why this treatment will not work. It will put your mind at ease, and it is always best to get something right the first time than have to go through multiple treatments by making on mistake.
5. Where possible, stick with your Orthodontist
If there is a chance that you will have to move during a treatment, it is advisable to stick with the Orthodontist you are already using. In most cases, the cause of a move is unpredictable and possibly unplanned.
Another Orthodontist may have a different approach to the treatment you’re having, as every orthodontist has their own method and technique. It is worth discussing with your current Orthodontist if it is just not possible, as he can give you your records which may help.
However, it is definitely worth speaking to your own specialist before making a decision.
6. It will be uncomfortable
There is no actual pain throughout the treatment, but there will be discomfort especially in the initial stages. This is because your teeth will have to adjust to the pressure being applied by the braces, it takes time. With each visit to have the pressure applied, it will be the same – having to get used to that new pressure. In some cases, some orthodontists’ recommend painkillers for the first few weeks.
7. Care for your teeth
It is important to properly look after your teeth during and after treatment. Whether you are undergoing a treatment for clear braces, Six Month Smiles or ceramic braces – you need to make sure to wash brush thoroughly, not just for the health of your teeth but for your gums.
The money you invest to improve your teeth will be wasted if you do not properly look after your teeth, this will benefit you in the long term.
8. Retainers are required after
After you have your braces off, your orthodontist will make a mould of your teeth and make a custom fitted retainer which you will have to wear up 1-2 years.
These require proper cleaning and it is something you need to consider in the after care of your treatment. After your treatment, you will still have to maintain your smile with the use of a retainer.
By not doing so, you teeth may revert back, undoing the time it took for the treatment to take effect.
