When it comes to straightening teeth, most people will automatically think of fixed metal braces – without realising there are different types of brace with their advantages and disadvantages. Here at Heaton Mersey, your local Stockport and Manchester Orthodontist, we have various braces available to give you a straighter smile on your terms. In this post, we’ll talk through the pros and cons of each and help you towards making a choice.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners make tiny movements to teeth to change their position over time. They’re comfy, clear and removable, so there are lots of great reasons to give them a go. What’s more, the treatment involves a 3D image of your finished smile, so you’ll have an idea of how your teeth will look at the end. We can’t think of many negatives to this type of brace, except that for some, removing clear braces for eating and drinking can be awkward – and you’ll need to clean them as well as your teeth.

Damon braces

Another well-known type, Damon braces are a bit like fixed braces, except they’re self-adjusting. Instead of having to wear elastics to keep teeth on track, these use a sliding mechanism instead – so can be a more comfortable and practical alternative. In addition, they’re clear – so not as obvious as some kinds of braces. However, Damon braces don’t offer the same level of freedom as clear aligners, and they are fixed, which means they can be less flexible for your lifestyle.

NHS braces

These are your traditional types of brace, but can be more affordable for some and treatment can usually start right away. Most teens under 18 will be eligible for free ones if they are referred to us after a full orthodontic assessment from their dentist. There can be drawbacks to these braces though – some think they look unsightly and they aren’t as comfortable as clear aligners.

Six Month Smiles

These quick braces in Stockport are ideal for teeth-straightening on a deadline. These use clear brackets and wires to shape smiles over time. Treatment tends to focus on the ‘middle’ 6 teeth usually visible when you smile, which can mean they’re not suitable for more complex cases. However, they’re discreet and quick to work, which makes them a popular choice.
