What is the difference between anti-wrinkle injections and dermal filler?
The main difference begins at a purely physical level and concerns what they are made of. Dermal fillers are commonly made from a sugar called hyaluronic acid, which naturally occurs in the body. This sugar is present in our skin tissue and contributes to volume, laxity, and firmness, making it completely safe to inject. Anti-wrinkle injections, on the other hand, are formulated from a medically regulated and FDA-approved toxin. Rather than being injected into the facial tissue like dermal fillers, they are used in over-active muscles in the face to combat lines and wrinkles.
What do facial aesthetics treat?
Now we’ve got the basics down, we’ll move on to what each treatment achieves and how it does so. Dermal fillers focus on adding or replenishing volume to areas of the face that are lacking structure, symmetry, or facial tissue. Ageing skin can sag, become loose, and form unwanted folds and hollows, but dermal fillers plump these areas to restore volume and facial structure. While dermal fillers focus on volume loss, anti-wrinkle injections focus on muscles and wrinkles. The toxin used in anti-wrinkle injections has many medical uses, but it is primarily used to soften facial lines. It relaxes the muscles in over-expressive areas to stop them contracting as animatedly or aggressively, lessening the creasing in the skin they cause.
Do facial aesthetics treat different areas?
Another big difference between these facial aesthetic treatments is their treatment areas. Dermal fillers focus mostly on the mid-to-lower face where we experience volume in our facial tissue. This is because when we lose facial volume, our skin tends to fall downwards and present us with unwanted hollows and folds. Common treatment areas are the cheeks and lips, which we can plump and add contour to by introducing this added volume. Anti-wrinkle injections, however, focus mainly on the upper part of the face where our expressive muscles reside. We treat forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet with anti-wrinkle injections to soften the appearance of lines there when the muscles are active.
